Water Fitness Instructors
A water exercise instructor is responsible for directly supervising and leading participants during assigned water exercise classes. The instructor designs and delivers a comprehensive workout in accordance with the safety guidelines established by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the Aquatic Exercise Association (AEA). Throughout the class, the instructor continuously monitors participants’ body positioning and physical responses to ensure safety and proper technique.
Essential Responsibilities
· Provides direct leadership of water exercise classes by designing and leading comprehensive workouts, incorporating proper warm-up, stretching, cardiovascular exercise, and cool-down segments.
· Instructs participants on correct exercise techniques, identifies target muscle groups, and demonstrates exercises both in-water and from the pool deck.
· Monitors participant safety, including entry/exit from the pool, body positioning, exercise form, and overall physical responses. Adapts exercises as needed based on individual participant needs and group fitness levels.
· Conducts periodic check-ins during class/sessions to ensure participant’s well-being.
· Immediately alerts lifeguard staff if a participant appears distressed or requires emergency assistance.
· Attends and participates in all required training sessions and professional development workshops.
· Enforces all pool safety rules and facility guidelines to maintain a secure and positive environment for all participants.
· Flexible in taking on additional responsibilities as needed to support facility operations.
Knowledge and Abilities
· Demonstrated knowledge of kinesiology, human anatomy, and aquatic exercise techniques in both shallow and deep-water settings or willingness to learn.
· Skilled in leading group fitness sessions for individuals of all ages and varying physical abilities, including those with disabilities.
· Receptive to feedback from Supervisors and committed to continuous personal and professional improvement.
· Strong communication skills; able to convey instructions clearly in both verbal and written formats.
· Thrive in dynamic, fast-paced aquatic environment while maintaining a professional and positive demeanor.
· Foster respectful and cooperative relationships with team members and facility guests.
· Self-motivated and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications
· Education: High School graduate or GED.
· Experience: 6mths-1yr. water exercise participation.
· Preferred Certifications: ACSM, AEA, ACE, or AFAA and current First Aid/CPR (willing to obtain within 1yr).
Working Conditions
Work is performed in and around a swimming pool environment, which may involve hot and humid conditions. The position may require prolonged periods of sitting, standing, or walking, as well as lifting or moving equipment, supplies, and assisting patrons as needed. Employees may also be called upon to provide support during emergency situations in coordination with other aquatic staff members.
